Viagra may reduce risk of early death in men, study finds
After all, it's possible that Viagra and other drugs like it are not just for treating erectile dysfunction. Thanks to a new study, carried out in the United States, it was possible to conclude that these treatments significantly reduce the risk of early death in men.
Published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, a scientific journal, and funded by the pharmaceutical company Sanofi, the research analyzed 14 years of medical records for more than 23,000 American men.
All were taking a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE-5i), such as Viagra, which is widely used for erectile dysfunction, explains the Science Alert portal, citing the study. These data were later compared with others relating to 48,000 men who were not taking any similar medication.
Thus, it was possible to conclude that, among men who were taking a PDE-5i, the risk of dying, of cardiovascular disease, was lower by 39%. The risk of death from any cause decreased by 25%, and that of suffering a cardiac event, namely a heart attack, decreased by 13%.
Despite the positive results, the researchers say that it is necessary to continue to study this connection and reach more concrete conclusions.
